Methodist Hospital is looking to hire a The Surgical Technologist Trainer to join our surgical team! Position Summary: The Surgical Technologist Trainer, as part of the surgical leadership team, provides leadership that reflects the vision, mission, and philosophy of the Surgical Services Department and PNHS. The Education & Training Specialist facilitates best practices and enhances safe, quality patient care by: Planning, developing, and conducting professional educational opportunities for employees of PNHS in a quality conscious and cost-effective manner. Establishing a work environment that promotes learning by individual growth/development, professional practice, and a collaborative team approach to assure excellence in delivery of quality, technical skills and high level of staff satisfaction. Conducting unit-based consultation for clinical quality excellence. The Surgical Technologist Trainer will plan, promote, and deliver professional education programs for Surgical Technologists & students (as well as other integrated groups within Surgical Services Department). Reserves, confirms, prepares, and monitors program arrangements as needed which may include registration, facility, audio-visual equipment for educational environments. Coordinates orientation of new employees. Collaborates with Same Day Surgery Director, Patient Care Managers, OR Supervisors, and Preceptors to develop individualized learning plans for each orientee. Uses performance development resources to assist in development of an individualized competency-based orientation for newly hired or transitioning personnel. Conducts unit-based consulting for clinical quality excellence. Regularly monitors patient population-related quality metrics. Promotes quality of care and safe patient care through routine consulting with clinical staff. Raises staff awareness utilizing at-the-elbow educational opportunities. Facilitates on-going staff development. Develops and conducts a periodic needs assessment to determine educational needs of CST staff. Develops and ensures implementation of in-services/training in response to needs identified by unit leadership. Identifies educational needs across a continuum of patient care and ensures implementation of programs and materials using evidence-based practice to ensure staff maintains a high level of clinical expertise. Provides mentoring and development opportunities for Preceptors, Charge Nurses and other interested staff. Provides training opportunities and resources for staff for whom the nurse leader has identified as having performance concerns. Maintains and updates educational and competency materials to reflect current practices. Develops and ensures implementation of new procedure, product & new equipment training. Maintains records of competency and educational activities to meet regulatory agency and legal requirements while promoting individual accountability for learning. Maintains competency as trained Clinical Simulation Facilitator and utilizes simulation as training method when appropriate. Participates in shared governance model. Promotes awareness of external opportunities for learning and networking. Consults and collaborates with individuals/community agencies in providing effective continuing education opportunities for the CST staff and provides leadership by actively participating in these programs. Evaluates educational program viability and makes recommendations as to the value of continuing, changing, or discontinuing on-going programs. Actively promotes staff development by providing a schedule and information for local/national educational opportunities, certification, etc. Assists in the establishment of standards or criteria based on the mission, values, and philosophy of PNHS. Participates in departmental policy and procedure development, imple entation, and interpretation for members of the healthcare team. *Utilizes the concepts and tools of continuous improvement to ensure excellence in patient care endeavors. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 1.0 FTE, primarily days, Monday through Friday. Schedule may vary based on department needs Required Qualifications Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination: Minimum of 5 years' experience either in the operating room in the scrub role or as an instructor in a surgical technology program or a combination of both. Licensure/ Registration/ Certification: Must be certified through one of the following Surgical Technologist Programs: CST ( at time of hire or obtain the certification within 12 months of hire. -or- NCCT ( at time of hire or obtain the certification within 36 months of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Highly organized individual with leadership and problem-solving skills. Must possess the ability to handle multiple projects at one time. Demonstrate knowledge of infection prevention principles necessary to provide the appropriate experience to our external clients. Competently performs job-specific technical skills and possesses identified in the job-specific competency-based orientation material. Records maintenance skills of staff. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community of roles.
