Job Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) provides high-quality care to patients with cardiovascular conditions, often transitioning from critical care to progressive care settings. The RN monitors, assesses, and treats patients who require specialized cardiovascular care, including those recovering from heart surgeries, myocardial infarctions, and other cardiac conditions. This role requires a deep understanding of cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, medication administration, and patient education.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients' cardiovascular status, including monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and ECG readings.
  • Identify and respond to changes in patient conditions, escalating care when necessary.
  • Perform routine physical assessments and document findings accurately in patient records.
  • Administer cardiac medications such as antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, vasodilators, and other drugs according to physician orders and protocols.
  • Monitor patients for side effects and therapeutic responses to cardiovascular medications.
  • Use advanced cardiac monitoring equipment, including telemetry, to continuously assess patients' heart rhythms and hemodynamic status.
  • Respond promptly to alarms and arrhythmias, initiating interventions such as defibrillation or code blue protocols as needed.
  • Work closely with cardiologists, critical care physicians, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for each patient.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, providing detailed patient updates and collaborating on treatment strategies.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team to ensure seamless transitions in care, including between intensive care and stepdown units.
  • Educate patients and their families about cardiovascular conditions, post-operative care, medication regimens, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families dealing with cardiac-related stress and anxiety.
  • Ensure that patients understand discharge instructions and outpatient follow-up requirements.
  • Assist in coordinating care transitions for patients being moved from the ICU to the stepdown unit or being discharged to home care or rehabilitation.
  • Work with case managers and social workers to ensure that post-hospital care needs are arranged for a smooth discharge process.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of patient assessments, treatments, medications, and responses to interventions.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, as well as state and federal regulations regarding patient care and documentation.
Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
Licensure:
  • Active Registered Nurse license in the state of Michigan.
Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - Required
  • Telemetry Certification - Preferred
Experience:
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a Cardiovascular Unit, ICU, or stepdown unit.
  • Proficiency in cardiovascular monitoring and care, including telemetry and advanced cardiac life support.
