PAYROLL SPECIALIST

AltairStrickland is looking for a full-time Payroll Specialist , at our Corporate Office in La Porte Texas. This position will report directly to the AltairStrickland, LLC Payroll Supervisor and will be eligible to participate in the Company’s sponsored health insurance plans (medical, dental, vision), insured life, 401 (k), and disability plans effective the first day of the month following the date of employment.
Additionally, the successful candidate receives Paid Time Off (PTO) at time of hire, as approved for utilization by their respective manager, without having to accrue time to obtain the PTO benefit. SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for overseeing, administrating, and managing payroll functions to best facilitate accuracy, timely completion and compliance with corporate payroll policies, procedures and federal/state regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Enters, processes, implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate administering of payroll transactions occur on a weekly and semi-monthly basis.
  • Posts all employee time, including hours worked, into the payroll system; as well as code, sort and assign all related charges to the appropriate general accounting ledger.
  • Ensures confidential, accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, pay rate or craft changes, increases, transfers and terminations.
  • Ensure accurate and complete employment onboarding process documentation is obtained and retained to support payroll processes, wage compensation and deductions schedule, per federal, state, local and or company guidelines.
  • Provides response to payroll inquiries and resolves any discrepancies.
  • Audits payroll register to ensure changes were made and payroll is accurate on a weekly basis. Assist or facilitates formal internal and or external audits by providing records and documentation to support company’s transactions.
  • Receives and processes child support deductions and garnishments; and or other mandated withholding orders as necessary, as well as provides information for unemployment claims or other payroll inquiries as appropriate.
  • Complete, verify, and process deduction forms for payroll regarding administrative benefits such as 401(k), health insurance, HSA accounts, etc., and or other company deducted items.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with employees, vendors, suppliers and internal companies to act as the authorized point of contact and or as a subject matter expert for the company in payroll related matters or inquiry’s; and always treating such information associated with respective tasks with the utmost of confidentiality and or sharing only for business purposes, with those that are designated to have access to privileged and confidential information.
  • Support and be responsive to both setting priorities and resolving issues consistent with Company standards, policies, procedures, and in protecting others Personal Protective Information (PPI) associated with payroll.
  • Make well-informed decisions, assign correct priorities, and ensure appropriate documentation processes are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  • Performs other administrative, office duties or projects as required or as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The position reports directly to the Payroll Supervisor and has direct reporting and accounting responsibilities to other Department Directors and executives, as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma is required with 4 years applicable industry experience preferred; and or a college degree with 2 years applicable experience; formal certifications in Professional Payroll (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) is preferred.
Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to work well with people are essential. Proficient leadership skills and initiative-taking decision making and critical thinking skills are necessary. The ability to oversee multiple tasks, correspondences and to work in a team setting is required. Also, the ability to work independently as necessary to complete mandated timelines is essential.
Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of business problems, including Familiarity with general accounting recordkeeping protocols. Able to understand, create and utilize management reports, summaries, general ledgers, memos, spreadsheets, and other documents to communicate and complete job tasks.
Must have the ability to understand and utilize mathematics to solve problems, knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures to complete tasks and knowledge of business management principles involved in handling payroll functions.
Additionally, the ability to analyze and apply policies and or procedures as well as legal documents or government notifications to conduct business transactions is a requirement.
Computer skills to navigate programs; create application tools and documents utilizing programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as various accounting software platforms and databases programs are necessary.
The ability to negotiate, provide customer service functions and interact with employees, vendors and other agencies is essential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regular travel by airplane and automobile in conducting business may be required. The ability to communicate orally with customers, management and other co-workers, both individually and in front of a group is necessary. Hours worked in a day may be greater than 8 hours as well as some weekend work may be necessary to complete tasks at hand.
Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential. Activities include but are not limited to extended periods of sitting, extensive work at a computer workstation, filing, as well as other typical general office tasks.
Hearing and vision within normal ranges is helpful for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. No manual heavy lifting is expected, without utilization of appropriate equipment. Exertion of up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally may be required.
Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and FAX machines as well as the ability to make site visits to job sites and or off-site meetings, as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The job is typically performed indoors in a traditional office setting; however, traveling to on-site project locations or business meetings may occur as well as overnight stays are a possibility.
DRESS CODE
The company expects you to dress and groom in accordance with accepted social and business standards commonly referred to as “business casual.” Employees should strive to create a professional business appearance appropriate to ensuring customers, clients, and other employees feel comfortable doing business with the Company.
This may include the reduction of jewelry and or covering of body markings to best facilitate the professional appearance of the company. No profanity or offensive attire displayed while performing work for the company, as well as dress attire should incorporate modesty regarding physical appearance.
If additional clarification is necessary or if special events are required for you to attend as a representative of the company, you will be notified accordingly. Typically, the Company allows Friday to be a casual day providing the above guidelines are maintained.

  • Unauthorized possession of property belonging to the Company, of another employee, or of a client, vendor or visitor to the Company.
  • Negligent or deliberate destruction of or misuse of property belonging to a Company, its subsidiaries or to a customer or visitor to the Company.
