Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the Director, Pain Management and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technician is responsible for providing surgical scrub on all types of major and minor surgical procedures dependent on individual experience. 

What you will do in this role: 

  • Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, sets up and maintains a sterile field for surgical procedures applying special knowledge of asepsis.
  • Displays ability to function effectively in surgical cases across multiple services with multiple surgeons.
  • Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for easy access and maximum efficiency to decrease delays.
  • Participates in a rotational call system as needed to provide for continuous availability of patient services.
  • Follows appropriate guidelines for setting up sterile field and instruments for designated procedures.
  • Takes personal initiative to learn new procedures with new physicians, coordinating personal schedule with assistant director to accommodate learning needs.
  • Applies principles of safety in performance of all responsibilities. Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to assist in surgical procedures in the Operating Room.
  • Assists CSPD personnel with the turnover and assembly of instrument sets when possible, especially during surgical downtimes.
  • Utilizes appropriate sterilization and decontamination techniques in the maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics in moving and lifting patients and equipment to prevent injury to patients and to self.
  • Re-stocks Operating Room supplies and removes excess or unnecessary equipment and supplies as caseload permits.
  • Under guidance of the Registered Nurse or Assistant Director, Operating Room, determines appropriate priorities for activities based on work demand.
  • Utilizes communication skills effectively in working with patients, physicians, and other personnel.
  • Maintains awareness of own limitations and seeks guidance from appropriate personnel.
  • Ensures that problems or concerns regarding activities in the Operating Room are communicated with the Assistant Director, Operating Room.
  • Shows initiative during surgical downtime by assisting co-workers and other areas with special needs.
  • Displays effective use of time management to minimize room turnover.  
What qualifications you will need:
  • Previous clinical experience in Operating Room environment required
  • Certification in Operating Room Technology preferred
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
