Group & Private Swim Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Swim Instructor creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe program conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. This position is at the Cottingham Campus and/or the Walhalla Pool.
A swim instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students and families in group, private, and semi-private swim lessons.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 15 years of age
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (Preferred)
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen certifications within the first 30 days of hire
  • Y Swim Lesson Instructor Certification within 60 days of hire preffered
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with Y standards
CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Maintain Swim Instructor Certification
  • Maintain YMCA Lifeguard Certification every 2 years
  • Maintain First Aid and Administering
  • Bloodborne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with Y guidelines, and prepares lesson plans accordingly
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the Y.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.
  • Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environment.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with members and staff using Listen First skills.
