Responsibilities

·Demonstrates competency in the following procedures, Polysomnography, baseline, split-night and PAP titration, MSLT, and MWT.  Has the basic knowledge of the following disorders but is not limited to, sleep apnea,   hypopnea, respiratory  effort related arousal, and sleep physiology examinations, narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, parasomnias, seizures, gastric reflux, continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure examinations, insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia versus apnea, seizures versus apnea, and documentation of events.

· Administers oxygen (in accordance to physician orders) and/or nasal CPAP/BiPAP according to department procedure. Instructs patient on the proper use and care of the equipment.

· Assumes responsibility for performing all types of neurodiagnostic testing for adolescent, young/middle/mature adult patients and sleep disorder testing procedures for adolescent, young/middle/mature adult patients

· Evaluates patients’ and significant others’ educational needs and initiates and implements appropriate teaching or makes appropriate referrals.

· Participates in non-direct patient care activities including educational activities, quality improvement activities, standards development and review, hospital/unit committees and other related activities.

Qualifications

Education:      

Diploma or degree in college level science field of polysomnography, electroneurodiagnostics or completion of degree and licensure in health care.

Licensure:     

Registered Polysomnographic Technician or registry eligible. Board certified by the Board of Registration of Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT) must be obtained within first year of employment.

Experience:

Six months experience in Sleep Disorders Center preferred, but not required.

Certification/Course:

BLS required.
