As a part of our continuous focus on offering high performance and cutting-edge products and solutions, the field of electro-thermo-mechanical engineering as applied to high voltage advanced power conversion and management is of strategic and critical importance. In this context, Spellman High Voltage Electronics Corp. is seeking a highly talented, motivated, creative, and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team.
For this critical role, our expectations are to drive creative mechanical engineering solutions from concept through release of the product focusing on thoroughly and meticulously on DFX.
Further, in this role, soft skills, technical expertise, coaching and mentoring, are all key requirements to be successful.
Role Description:
  • You will be immersed in the Spellman Engineering product design and development environment and will play a crucial role in very exciting and challenging projects from concept through to prototype validation and then production ramp-up, collaboratively with other members of the greater multi-functional Spellman team. You will leverage your knowledge of advanced thermo-mechanical design and analyses tools, your expertise in electromechanical components, materials, and fabrication practices to drive cutting edge designs and solutions. This includes working with both metallic and non-metallic materials, understanding the constraints in mechanical packaging related to heat and stress, and applying best practices to ensure the durability and efficiency of our products in compliance with DFX best practices. Further, you will utilize your deep understanding of various interconnectivity wiring techniques, materials behaviors under various operating conditions, and tools to drive a seamless integration of mechanical and electrical components in our design and address customer performance specifications.
  • Additionally, a critical aspect of this role will be to provide robust support to our manufacturing and sales team and to our customers. This will include supplying the necessary materials and information to kick-start sales processes and assist in winning new business opportunities. Your expertise will ensure that our clients receive the highest level of service and satisfaction, fostering long-term relationships and contributing to the company's success.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to meet project deadlines and achieve company goals, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of quality and performance.
What you will do:
  • Mechanical design and packaging of Spellman products
  • Participate in the design review meetings to help conceptualize the product, interface with both outside and inside customers to assure proper fit and compliance with all requirements.
  • Design proper mechanical packaging of products using various CAD & Analysis tools to ensure meeting customer specs and allow efficient manufacturing in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities or outside suppliers.
  • Demonstrate compliance with product specific design and application requirements through engineering calculations including mechanical and thermal stresses.
  • Collaborate closely with the electrical engineers, other members of the Mechanical Design group, the Manufacturing Engineering and the Quality Teams, to produce the most suitable product satisfying stringent design criteria's and the DFX guidelines for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Design documentation, which is one of the most important tasks for the mechanical engineering group; this entails creating 2D/3D detailed parts and full assembly drawings, creating and maintaining BOMs and revisions and specifying new parts and processes.
  • Maintenance and continuous improvement of our wide array of existing products is also an important part of what mechanical engineering does, building upon our 70+ years of experience and continuously optimize and upgrade our vast array of existing products.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is required (MS preferred)
  • 7+ years of experience designing power electronics packaging and other electromechanical systems in general, using AutoCAD & Inventor or similar software such as SolidWorks and/or Ansys is required,
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of electro-mechanical and interconnect components is required,
  • Broad knowledge of mechanical housing fabrication processes such as sheet metal, weldments, mechanical fastener systems is required. Experience with casting and plastic molding as well, is a plus,
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems in relation with engineering items and BOMs is required,
  • Experience with mechanical and thermal management systems using FEA software such as Ansys is highly desirable,
  • Ability to maintain product and assembly BOM structures matching CAD models, drawings, and physical builds. This requires a detailed-oriented approach to ensure accuracy and consistency across all documentation and physical products.
  • Ability to grasp complex technical topics and abstract key issues and risks in an actionable form,

Our good faith estimate of the salary range for this role is $107,560 - $135,840. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and other factors. In addition to base pay, we offer a full benefits package.
This position requires on-site presence at Spellman High Voltage headquarters in Hauppauge, NY.
