PRN Days in Surgical Day Care
JOB SUMMARY:
With minimal supervision, provides nursing care in the Ambulatory setting directed toward meeting both the psycho-social and physical needs of the patient. Takes care of patients from age newborn through geriatric. Is a resource person and teacher. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain steady level of productivity. Is compatible and supportive, a team player. Communication on behalf of the patient reflects the mission, ethics and goals of Ashe Memorial Hospital as well as the focus statement of the department. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and Ashe Memorial Hospital policies, procedures and standards. Will perform all work with accordance to the mission, vision and values of Ashe Memorial Hospital (AMH).
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Previous experience in Outpatient surgery preferred.
License/Certifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of NC.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • ACLS certification current or is obtained within orientation/probationary period.
  • PALS certification current or is obtained within orientation/probationary period.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Same Day Center (SDC) RN provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the RN include (but are not limited to):
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment.
  • Performance reflects knowledge in all areas of care specific to the SDC.
  • Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of equipment. Ability to teach other staff members, perform minor troubleshooting on equipment.
  • Knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on age of the patient and patient's clinical condition. Starts IVs with 97% or greater success of first attempt.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe preoperative assessment including pain on all patients and reassesses as needed postoperatively. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care as indicated and evaluates for effectiveness.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on identifies patient learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate, from pre-op to discharge. Initiates patient teaching as soon as the patient is able to understand. Gives instructions to family members that will assist the patient with recovery. Prepares patient for discharge and instructs patient or responsible party regarding home care of patient according to the physician's orders by providing them with written and verbal instructions prior to discharge. Documents patients/family understands of discharge.
  • Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.
  • Identifies physical symptoms and changed including pain and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible. Stays late willingly as needed. Works extra shifts.
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Practices good guest relations. Assists them in filling out forms, signing operative/procedural permits. Meets family concerns by notifying them of delays and changed that may occur, evidenced by documentation in the nursing.
  • Identifies and addresses psycho-social and cultural needs of patients and family.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
  • Approaches patient in a kind, gentle and friendly manner. Explains the routine of the day to the patient and family and instructs family where to wait.
  • Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medication and parenteral fluids according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that per-op checklist is complete (H&P present, consent signed, test results present, etc.) before patient is taken into surgical suite.
  • Assessment and re-assessment of the patient is clearly and concisely communicated in charting, documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes all aspects of Standard Precautions and appropriate measures to prevent and control infection as per policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).
