Job Description
The Technician Pharmacy I is an entry level health-system pharmacy position. They perform medication preparation and distribution tasks under a pharmacist's supervision. Additionally, they gain knowledge and experience in essential functions of the pharmacy including compounding, automated dispensing technology and software, regulatory requirements, documentation and inventory management.
Responsibilities
  • Knowledgeable of generic and trade names of medications as well as dosage forms and strengths.
  • Stocks medication and accurately selects medication for distribution and dispensing.
  • Utilizes pharmacy software, electronic health records and basic word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Accurately restocks automated dispensing cabinets utilizing reports appropriately.
  • Compounds pharmaceuticals for parenteral administration using aseptic technique under a laminar air flow hood, compounding aseptic isolator or clean room as assigned following United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) standards.
  • Performs non-sterile compounding with aseptic technique in accordance with USP standards.
  • Packages bulk items in unit dose packaging and keeps appropriate records as assigned.
  • Fulfills bulk medication orders for office practices as assigned.
  • Replenishes various emergency boxes and kits as assigned.
  • Inspects and maintains drug storage locations in accordance with Virginia Board of Pharmacy requirements.
  • Knowledgeable of drug storage requirements and appropriately responds to temperature alarms.
  • Reports medication errors and controlled substance losses. Files completed reports, analyzes causes, evaluates alternative strategies for avoidance and makes recommendations for system improvement.
  • Coordinates courier transport of medication to outlying facilities as needed.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all information including financial, operational, employee, human resource, healthcare and patient data and information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education Minimum:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Education Preferred:
None
Work Experience Minimum:
Sufficient math skills to readily learn metric system, metric conversion, and ratio & proportion calculations.
Sufficient verbal skills to readily learn medical terminology.
Work Experience Preferred:
Prior hospital or retail pharmacy experience
Licenses & Certifications Minimum:
Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy
Licenses & Certifications Preferred:
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certification desirable
