Job Summary

This is a Part-Time Instructor Pool in our Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWD) department for available assignments during the academic year. Applications are considered throughout the academic year and reviewed based on departmental needs. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include working days, evenings and/or weekends.

Essential Duties

The Instructor will teach a variety of AHA sanctioned courses and provide quality instruction in a safe environment to students. This position requires the individual to follow the current course outlines, objectives, evaluate student competencies and maintain safety procedures within the classroom according to the required curriculum established by Alvin Community College (ACC) and the American Heart Association. This position requires the individual to follow the current course outlines, objectives, evaluation mechanisms for the procedures within the classroom. The instructor constantly evaluates their effectiveness in the classroom by helping students obtain course learning outcomes and the impact that they have on student retention.

  • Instruct and supervise a diverse population of students in the classroom various times and locations
  • Provides educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled class times
  • Possess a commitment to student engagement, student success, and instructional excellence
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and oral
  • Prepare and utilize a course syllabus and assessments for each course using guidelines established by the institution
  • Maintain current knowledge of effective teaching methodologies and utilizes a variety of instructional delivery methods, classroom media, and educational resources
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of students
  • Assess students' performance through a range of measurement activities and keeps them informed of their progress in a timely manner
  • Build positive and professional relationship with students, colleagues, college administration, and the community
  • Submit timely college reports and forms to the appropriate divisions and departments
  • Provide recommendations to the Instructional Dean, Department Chair, and appropriate college committees regarding curriculum, instruction and division operations
  • Exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning through participation in professional development activities
  • Adhere to Alvin Community College's policies and procedures
  • Attend institutional meetings as required
  • Other related duties as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Current Basic Life Support Instructor Certification through the American Heart Associate
  • Familiar with use of proper American Heart Association protocols, mannequins, feedback devices, instructor manual, etc.
  • One (1) year experience as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Basic proficiency in online tools such as Blackboard
  • Ability to teach American Heart Association courses such as Basic Life Support and Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED.
  • The instructor will frequently perform autonomously and must be self-motivated
  • Will be required to proceed with independent actions with mutually established guidelines and minimal supervision from the CEWD Director of Health Programs
  • Must be flexible with the ability to work days, nights, and/or weekends with the understanding that available hours will be based on the needs of the program not to exceed 19 hours per week
  • Must be flexible and understands a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed and that classes may be cancelled and/or rescheduled with minimal notice due to student need, student enrollment and/or program needs
  • Ability to teach in front of a group of people
  • Strong time management skills


Preferences

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor Certification through the American Heart Association
  • Associate degree in Health and/or Medical field from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Current licensure or certification as a health care provider (Licensed/Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, EMT, etc.)
  • Two (2) years of experience as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor
  • Two (2) years previous teaching experience, preferably at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Two (2) years of previous clinical experience in supervising students
