Job description
Job Summary:
The Local Driver Manager under general direction is responsible for managing the driver's performance for maximum profitability while providing excellent customer service and driver satisfaction. The Driver Manager will ensure overall safety and on-time delivery of assigned freight by adhering to DOT, FMCSA, B1 visa program, and company safety and general policies.
The Driver Manager is the liaison and informant between drivers and office staff, organizational goals, and policies. Additionally the Driver Manager ensures that drivers achieve full and effective utilization of Samsara E-Logs, status updates, document scanning, HOS, routing, fueling preferences, border crossings, and other company solutions and guidelines.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and manage the driver's time for efficiency, ensuring that customer expectations are met for pickup and delivery, DOT Hours of Service regulations are followed, and any delays are communicated to the customer.
  • Monitor and improve driver onboard technology/e-log/Samsara utilization, ensuring all macros are correct and sent as needed, including time off events, Hours of Service, and all driver/load movements are accurate within the system.
  • Monitor, manage, and improve driver fuel efficiency and compliance to fuel solutions.
  • Monitor out-of-route mileage, fuel stops, and issue new fuel solutions.
  • Always ensure safety compliance, providing driver training when needed, and participating in Safety Campaigns.
  • Complete first report of incident for all incidents and accidents, and schedule driver to see safety upon return.
  • Conduct accident/incident interviews with drivers and the Safety Department.
  • Interact regularly with the Safety Department and the Log Audit Department.
  • Document driver disciplinary issues in concordance with company policies and refer for discipline when appropriate.
  • Train, and assess drivers and their qualifications as per driving laws.
  • Coordinate with drivers, staff, and management to hold meetings and resolve issues.
  • Manage records of personnel, expenditures and of government rules and driving regulations.
  • Coordinate on a regular basis with transportation staff and authorities on PUC, DMV certificates and in case of accidents.
  • Keep track of driver hours and miles in coordination with Load Planners to achieve maximum productivity in given hours.
  • Address driver communications and provide required data to drivers.
  • Driver Recruiting and Retention
  • Maintains adequate and timely record keeping of B1 driver miles, accessorial expenses, and cash advances to produce B1 payroll related reports; and communicates with Akna to ensure timely and accurately compensation of drivers based on approved cost allocations and miles.
  • Foresee and communicate driver resignations/terminations needs to keep empty trucks at minimum. Driver terminations and driver needs should be communicated through Teams Channel "Terminations,"
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate relays, unit re-powers, and re-powering of equipment to meet the customer needs.
  • Ensure equipment is always available for use, moving equipment as needed for maintenance and advising maintenance of location and maintenance need.
  • Maintain costs and profits within the budget. Aid in cost cutting by organizing timely emptying of loaded trailers and parking, and address problems promptly.
  • Meet outline objectives for revenue per mile, revenue per truck, revenue per day and empty mile ratio.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation of freight movement.
  • Adhere to federal norms for revenue generation while dispatching freight.
  • Assess trucks, trailers, and drivers, manage maintenance and arrange for quality vehicles and personnel when needed. Coordinate with shop schedule and driver availability.
  • Arrange for onsite periodical inspections of vehicles in use.
  • Develop amiable, genuine, and supportive relations with drivers on a personal and professional level and collaborate with other departments to solve their problems.
  • Coordinate with drivers to ensure timely pickup and delivery.
  • Keep abreast with latest technologies to enhance company results and driver experience.
  • Coordinate with team leader to manage driver pay, bills, security and home time, and assess availability of re-power.
  • When necessary, accurately builds orders received from our customers in ITS Inc. dispatch system.
  • Maintain existing and develop new business from our customer base.
  • Track various loads in SAMSARA and TMW and be able to determine when a recovery plan is needed and be able to execute plan to ensure on time delivery and achieve other objectives.
  • Process over, short and damaged freight and related documentation for customer resolution.
  • Administer and ensure adherence to the following "Driver Manager Safety Checklist for Drivers Changing Equipment Types."
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Provide timely and courteous communication in a clear and consistent manner and with high integrity with International Transportation Services, Inc. customers.
  • Strong organization and time management skills essential.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, dependable, and a self-starter.
  • Strong knowledge of motor carrier operations and geography.
  • Demonstrate high resource utilization.
Education and Experience:
  • 2+ years of fleet or dispatch experience.
  • Experience in managing a fleet of 20-30 truck/driver outfit
  • Driver Manager experience preferred.
  • Must be an effective user of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Point, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Experience in Mcleod and Samsara
  • Must be familiar with Hours-of-Service regulations, Department of Transportation regulations, and OSHA.
  • Ability to calculate transit times
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to sit for extensive hours
  • Communicate using telephone and computer technology
