Description
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work - Monday - Friday; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; 12 months; flexible to the needs of the program; may be required to occasionally work after regular business hours.
Qualifications - Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) professional license issued through the New York State Education Department, currently registered and in good standing. Current First Aid and CPR required. Experience in pediatric care. Valid New York State Driver's License.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance - Authorized to work in the United States and pass all background clearances.
Summary/Objective - Responsible for promoting health and safety with the children, their families, and the center staff. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases and spread of illness within the program. Supports Bright Beginnings program initiatives, policies and procedures. Performs duties in accordance with the regulations of any and all programs through which the children are served: Office of Children & Family Services, NYS Education Department, NYS Department of Health, and NYS Department of Agriculture.
Essential Functions -
Treatment of Children
  • Performs on-site evaluation of ill or injured children.
  • Takes vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature.
  • Treats minor injuries - Provides basic First Aid.
  • Performs medical procedures as appropriate, such as feeding tube, trach care, oral and nasal suctioning, nebulizer, in accordance with physicians' prescriptions.
  • Collects and review incident and minor injury records.
  • Makes recommendation of retention or exclusion per OCFS Health Care Plan.
  • Communicates children's health status with appropriate staff.
  • Facilitates the resupplying of first aid kits. Maintains AED for pediatric patients.
Medication/Prescription Administration
  • Administers and records medication administration in accordance with agency procedures and OCFS healthcare plan.
  • Ensures the proper storage of medication.
  • Responsible for handling all aspects of children's medically related prescriptions.
Health/Education
  • Collects cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students. Participates in the development and implementation of individual child health care plans.
  • Participates in Bright Beginnings individualized education plan meetings.
  • Educates parents on the importance of current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Health.
  • Research and distributes health related educational materials to families and staff.
  • Assists to develop curricula related to health and safety.
  • Coordinates program wide health and safety education activities to assist staff and families in making health and wellness decisions.
  • Assists in the procurement of health and safety related materials and equipment.
  • Models/trains staff in health procedures in accordance with the plan directed by R.N.
  • Conducts training at staff development events, including CPR/AED on site.
Records Management
  • Ensures children have required medical and emergency related enrollment documents.
  • Reviews medical and emergency enrollment documents for completeness and accuracy
  • Reports non-compliant immunization records to Director. Ensures immunization catch-up plan if needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of family and child records.
Administrative Support
  • Contact parents and/or physicians' offices for required information or action.
  • Participates as the health specialist in team meetings.
  • Serves as the health and safety liaison person between the home, program, and community.
  • Monitors the facility for health issues.
  • Assists to develop/revise program policies and procedures as it relates to health and safety.
  • Prepares statistical reports for the Department of Education and Department of Human Services as requested.
Other
  • Report any suspected incidents of child abuse or maltreatment directly to the Statewide Central register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment.
  • Consults with nursing department staff when needed.
  • Perform other minor LPN duties as appropriate.
  • Attend and satisfactorily complete all required in-services.
