Job Description

The City of Murphy Municipal Court seeks to add a part-time Court Bailiff to its' team! As our Bailiff, you will provide law enforcement and protective services within the Municipal Court to protect City employees and the public, and foster general public compliance with City, State, and Federal laws, all while modeling our core values of Murphy P.R.I.D.E.
The Court Bailiff receives immediate direction from the Municipal Court Administrator and while Court is in session, is subject to the orders of the Presiding Judge of the Court.

Schedule Commitment This is a regular part-time position working roughly 10-15 hours per week dependent upon scheduled court dates.

Pay Plan This opportunity is non-exempt and budgeted on Pay Grade #34.

The pay plan range below is shown to represent opportunities for growth and development within this opportunity. We are seeking to hire between the Min to Mid range of the pay grade shown dependent upon qualifications.

Examples of Duties

WORK PERFORMED
•Patrol and maintain security of the Municipal Court and the Court offices
•Protect judges, prosecuting attorneys, and others from physical violence, to ensure courtroom safety and compliance with courtroom procedures
•Ensure efficient operation and maintain order in the courtroom; call court dockets; check-in defendants, witnesses, and police officers; check-in and seat jurors for jury trials
•Escort defendants, witnesses, and the public to assigned areas during trials; monitor persons entering the court for possible possession of weapons; inspect packages entering courtroom for weapons or explosives
•Provide information, assistance and related court services to defendants and the general public
•Accept direction from supervisors and managers; keep supervisors informed of relevant activity; work well with managers, co-workers, and others both internally and externally
•Follow and evaluate security and operating procedures and make recommendations to supervisor
•Enforce appropriate City Ordinances, State and Federal laws, and all Court Policies
•Call insurance companies to verify policy coverage on requests for insurance dismissal
•Process and serve warrants, subpoenas and other legal process as ordered by the Municipal Court
•Call defendants regarding outstanding warrants
•Make arrests when necessary and coordinate transfer of prisoners in custody
•Display proficiency in officer safety and maintain an acceptable physical fitness level Court Bailiff Page 2 of 3
•Maintain appropriate uniform (including all equipment e.g. bullet proof vest, gun belt, etc.) and acceptable personal hygiene
•Operates and maintains a police duty related equipment
•Attends training activities and receives classroom and field instruction in job related subjects to enhance and improve skills and abilities and meets all mandated training requirements as specified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for the maintenance of a licensed peace officer and Bailiff-related Texas Municipal Court training sessions

Typical Qualifications

Eligibility
Education
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
Experience
  • Two (2) years full-time police experience within the last five (5) years
Licenses/Certifications
  • Licensed, or licensable without delay, by date of appointment as a peace officer in the state of Texas through TCOLE
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License without restriction (except "A") by date of appointment - driving record must be in compliance with City policy
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Must have a general working knowledge of Police Officer and/or law enforcement regulations
  • Knowledge of courtroom techniques and handling evidentiary material; Federal and State laws, and City and County ordinances; Court Policies, Procedures and law enforcement practices.


This position is part time and is not benefit eligible.
