The Director of Safety will be responsible for creating and maintaining the safety culture and program for Lawrence Companies, Inc and its subsidiaries. The Director of Safety will partner with operating divisional leadership and employees to provide leadership and technical assistance in all aspects of safety. Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading the organization in the reduction of contributory collisions and injuries and maintaining FMCSA regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze program effectiveness through a comprehensive program of data analysis, loss trending and reporting to identify loss trends and determine effective methods to drive continuous, measurable improvement of our safety results.
  • Deployment and monitoring of safety and loss control management systems including at least the following:
  • Lead the ongoing evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of safety programs, technology, processes and initiatives relative to risk mitigation for trucking/fleet maintenance operations that are aimed at improving safety results and/or behaviors.
  • Lead the Driver/employee training continuum that begins at time of hire and incorporates periodic, remedial and targeted programs to improve individual performance and overall safety results; establish and maintain management reporting and engagement initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain a risk assessment process that proactively identifies employees and departments that need additional training and/or leadership intervention.
  • Ensure that divisional leadership has the technical support, defined processes and essential data needed to communicate and manage the safety performance and expectations of their divisions.
  • Working with divisional leadership, manage continual evaluation of all facilities to ensure integration of the safety processes into their daily work.
  • Accountable for partnering with Recruiting to ensure we have the correct Driver Qualification standards in place.
  • Review and evaluate company policies as practices as needed to support our safety values and expectations.
  • Ensure that all current and new processes and practices are in full compliance with DOT regulations and improve our CSA performance. Review data that impacts those scores and successfully appeals any errors that negatively impact them as well as initiate internal process to improve the results.
Establishment and leadership of programs to ensure requirements are meeting Company policy and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations of at least the following:
  • Driver/employee selection standards and practices - all pre-employment aspects (background, MVR, screening, etc.)
  • Ongoing driver qualification through collaboration with DOT driver file maintenance shared service support
  • Controlled substances and alcohol screening programs and management training
  • Hours of service
  • Driver training, medical qualification, licensing and ongoing certification requirements
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance requirements
  • Maintain overall compliance with FMCSA
  • Ensure OHSA requirements are met and that required policies, procedures and training are in place.


Work Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience in a safety role
  • Preferred experience and familiarity of the transportation industry with progressive leadership positions
  • Prefer a candidate with a valid CDL
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Safety, Regulatory Compliance and Loss Control accountabilities that resulted in measurable improvements in metrics and efficiencies
  • Possess strong verbal, leadership, analytical, listening and written communication skills
  • Must be organized, able to multi-task, and have a strong attention to detail
  • Expert knowledge of functional application of DOT regulations and process improvement
  • Process oriented, with a proven ability to be a change agent capable of implementing change cross-functionally
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in using technology to measure and improve safe driving behaviors
  • Demonstrated success in developing direct reports to achieve their goals and full potential
  • The following certifications are preferred Certified director of Safety (CDS), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), and Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
