POSITION SUMMARY The Day Program Activity Assistant plays a vital role in supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by providing essential skill training in self-care, self-direction, independent living, and hygiene. This position involves working closely with individuals to enhance their communication, socialization, and fine-and-gross motor skills, while also offering enrichment through art, music, and sensory activities. Our Activity Assistant is a creative, enthusiastic, and dedicated professional who fosters a positive atmosphere through leisure activities that address the spiritual, cultural, physical, intellectual, and social needs of those we support.
Adherence to the policies and procedures of Volunteers of America, Dakotas, is essential, as is maintaining confidentiality and respecting the individuals we support. Advocating for their rights, promoting a positive image of the agency, and serving as a motivating role model are all critical aspects of this role. The Activity Assistant also engages in continuous professional development, including Person Centered Thinking (PCT), and ensure they are familiar with the pertinent information regarding the individuals they support, including medical, developmental, and program details. Timely and accurate completion of necessary paperwork is also required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Development and Implementation:
  • Responsible for creating a person-centered program of activities that are therapeutic in nature (such as art, exercise and music), cognitive activities (basic math, word games both individual and group), sensory activities (smell and sound), and tactile activities (such as gardening, clay, sand).
  • Facilitate group discussions, and activities.
  • Work to ensure that a quality program is offered every day.
  • Utilize existing community resources to augment program and encourage participant use.
  • Maintain the physical space to ensure the health and safety of participants.
  • Regularly documents on all participants. Communicates any significant changes or challenges experienced by participants with program supervisor and teams.
Team Communication/Training:
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Maintain professionalism and relay any pertinent information to teams.
  • Facilitate teamwork between all team members via open communication, sharing of responsibilities and a positive, constructive attitude.
Other
  • Administer and check medications when necessary, only if med certified.
  • Report person supported or staff concerns to your direct supervisor.
  • Collaborate with all staff in implementing and orchestrating the day’s activities and any modifications needed for the participants.
  • Collaborates with all staff in addressing any sudden changes and/or emergencies that emerge.
  • Assist with maintenance of agency vehicle; fill with gas, clean, repair requests etc.
  • Transportation as needed, local travel required, out of town travel maybe required.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

POSITIONS QUALIFICATIONS
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education: High School Diploma
Experience: Six months experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience
Skills: Excellent communication skills, time management are necessary
Certifications & Licenses: Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
Other Requirements: Requires consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in the performance of duties
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
A. 40 hour per week schedule. Position requires ability to stand, walk, sit reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hand and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing and seeing.
B. Capability to Lift, carry, push or pull up to 25 lbs on a daily basis
