POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Lifeguard is responsible for providing a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Maintains active surveillance of the pool area. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
•Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model. Completes related reports as required.
•Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. •Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
•Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
•Performs chemical testing when not guarding , as required, and takes appropriate action. Checks and records water temperature.
•Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
•Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Starting Pay: $13 per hour

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Minimum age of 16. Minimum of 18 years of age & high school degree preferred.
•American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR Pro and First Aid.*
•Must demonstrate the ability to pass the basic lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
•Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
•Ability to remain calm during high-stress situations. Must be able to speak clearly when talking with emergency response personnel.
•Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
•Complete all new employee orientation trainings within 45 days of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to humidity/dampness.
•Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
•Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
•Must have high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative to recognized victims in need.
•Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
•Always maintain a neat and professional appearance.
•Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.

*The Valpo Y provides the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course. The class teaches the basics for lifeguarding and is a highly accepted lifeguard certification nationwide.
