The City of Greensboro Engineering and Inspections Department is seeking a Surveying Party Chief to lead a survey crew in conducting topographical surveys, property surveys, and construction stakeouts. This role is critical in ensuring that the City's engineering designs are accurately recreated in the field and that natural and man-made features are precisely located for various projects. As a Party Chief, you will be providing both technical assistance and leadership, ensuring the survey crew performs at its best.

About the Role: As the Surveying Party Chief , your primary responsibility is to provide technical assistance and supervision to a survey crew in a variety of missions, such as conducting topographical surveys, property surveys and construction stakeouts. The survey work is necessary for locating natural features and man-made structures, property and right-of-way lines, as well as to accurately re-create engineering designs in the field. Duties will include, but are not limited to: using engineering plans and local site control to translate coordinate data into real world reference points; conducting surveys to ascertain the locations of natural features and man-made structures on the Earth's surface and underground; and plotting and interpreting deed and plats, searching for irons and measuring physical evidence. The employee in this position must be able to read, review and interpret various plans, maps, deeds and other documents to determine accurate survey points and be able to check accuracy of plats and deeds by taking additional field measurements or by computations. The employee should be able to use standard surveying equipment which include the use of a data collector, GPS, computer, and CAD drafting software. The successful applicant should have broad knowledge in the following areas: arithmetic, geometry and their applications; North Carolina and local property boundary law as it pertains to field and office procedures of surveying; use of deeds, record survey maps, plats and other legal property descriptions; and in the practical application of engineering science and technology that includes the application of principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to day-to-day surveying operations. The general ability to supervise, train, evaluate and coordinate the work of a field crew is expected. The physical requirements of the job include walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping, working in outdoor weather conditions, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Associate's Degree with 1 to 3 years of surveying experience (e.g., topographical surveys, property surveys, construction stakeouts), OR High School Diploma/GED with 5 to 7 years of related experience.
    • Supervisory experience (must be indicated on the application).
    • Experience using CAD drafting software (must be indicated on the application).
    • A valid Driver's License.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associate's Degree in Surveying Technology, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, or a related field.
    • Completion of the City's Foundations of Supervision course OR an equivalent supervisory coursework program.
    • Registered Land Surveyor (MUST include License number).
    • Experience using Microsoft Office software (must be indicated on the application).
    • Experience using Carlson Software.
