Under the administrative direction of the Converse County Road & Bridge Superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Operator performs a wide variety of routine semi-skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. JOB SUMMARY:
  • Department Operations : Performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of county roads, culverts, and cattle guards.  This work includes, but is not limited to, crack sealing, patching potholes, laying asphalt, painting, removing snow, placing de-ice material, hauling material, maintaining unpaved roads, maintaining and improving irrigation and storm drain infrastructure, trimming and removing trees, placing and maintaining street signs, and repairing concrete.  Operates a variety of hand tools and other equipment as assigned.  Performs any one of the duties typical of a laborer position. Prepares and places proper barricading for projects as assigned.  Follows all county and industry standard safety procedures.  Reports all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor.
  • Equipment Operations & Maintenance : Operates heavy equipment in order to complete the above-mentioned maintenance and repair activities.  Such equipment may include but is not limited to backhoes, scrapers, dozers, and loaders. Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and minor emergency repairs; checks and adjusts fluid levels; grease and lubricate parts as required; reports mechanical problems and the need for repair to supervisor.
  • Public Relations/Customer Service : Represents Converse County by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education/Experience : High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. No experience required – we will train the right candidate!
  • Language Skills : Ability to read, write, and speak English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Mathematical Skills : Ability to complete basic algebraic equations, such as the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability : Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Other KSA’s : Some knowledge of equipment operating principles and practices; skill in the operation of assigned equipment; ability to perform minor maintenance functions; ability to learn and follow standard safety practices and procedures common to equipment operation.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Must possess valid driver's license, and ability to obtain a valid Wyoming Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A within six months of employment. Ability to be insured under the County’s automobile insurance coverage. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Conditions Of Employment : This position is subject to satisfactory criminal background check, pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings, and maintain an acceptable driving record in order to be insurable under the County’s liability insurance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk; hear; see; stand; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crawl; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be physically capable of working outside for extended working hours and in varying inclement weather conditions, such as extreme cold and heat, and various forms of precipitation. Ability to drive and operate vehicles and equipment. 
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements – safety toe boots, safety eye glasses, gloves. After one (1) year of employment, employee is eligible for boot and prescription safety eye glasses allowance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. This position requires frequent work near moving mechanical parts. On occasion, this position may require work in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. Proper PPE is required.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually loud.

Starting Annual Pay Range:   $44,159.28 - $48,985.92, depending on experience (DOE)
