Part Time Surgical Veterinarian

*Position Overview:* The Surgical Veterinarian (SV) performs spay and neuter surgeries at the Loving Spay and Neuter Clinic (LSNC) for Richmond Animal League (RAL) pets, our municipal partners, other rescue organizations, community cats, and privately owned dogs and cats. The SV may also perform other surgical procedures for RAL pets and other minor procedures for our patients as ability and time allow. This position ensures that all surgical protocols are carried out according to published procedures and holds the entire staff to the highest standard of patient care. Candidates should possess leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, and a focus on providing exceptional veterinary care. The SV is expected to continuously seek to further their knowledge of the most current surgical, anesthetic, and analgesic techniques as they pertain to the LSNC’s function. The SV is part of the decision-making team and will collaborate on surgical and operational policies. The SV directly reports to the Veterinarian-in-Charge (VIC).

*Essential Functions:*

*Uphold Exceptional Animal Care Standards*
* Earn Fear Free certification and practice Fear Free techniques
* Use gentle handling and surgical technique
* Maintain sterility in surgery
* Practice patience and flexibility with fearful and reactive patients
* Ensure the patients are comfortable and their needs are met by our team

*Lead Surgeries at the LSNC*
* Conduct an initial preoperative examination on all patients upon arrival to assess surgical candidacy
* Guide drug choice and dosages based on established protocols and individual patient needs
* Create a game plan with the surgical staff for each day to optimize patient safety and process efficiency
* Perform spay and neuter surgeries, and other procedures as appropriate, for LSNC patients
* Perform spay and neuter surgeries and other elective and life-saving surgeries as appropriate for RAL shelter pets
* Utilize clinic software to input accurate medical record information
* Assess the recovery status of all patients after surgeries are complete and confirm that patients are fully recovered before checkout begins
* Remain on site until patients are fully recovered and ready for check out and be available for consult until the clinic closes
* See post-operative recheck appointments as needed

*Provide Veterinary Support to RAL Shelter Pets*
* Be available to provide veterinary care to RAL shelter pets if an emergency medical situation arises
* Guide the Shelter Operations Staff through our current triage procedure and medical protocols as needed

*Take a Leadership Role at the LSNC and RAL*
* Consider all clinic staff to be a valuable part of the medical team

*Qualifications:*
* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited Veterinary College
* At least 1 year of experience in practice performing high-volume surgeries
* At least 1 year of experience in shelter veterinary medicine preferred.

*Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:* This is a Part-Time, hourly position with a schedule to be determined by the VIC. Regular, predictable, reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

*Work Environment:* The Clinic is a high-noise area and the SV will be exposed to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal urine, and feces. Potential for exposure to animal bites and scratches exists.

*Physical Demands:* The Veterinarians must be able to sit or stand for hours at a time; lift at least 40 pounds without help and over 40 pounds with help; work at a computer and type; walk; get up and down on the floor; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $60.00 - $70.00 per hour
