FGSE Designer - Piping Designer

General Description: This position supports the overall technical direction and design of systems at all MARS facilities

Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Create 3D models and P&ID’s in AutoCAD Plant 3D detailing fluid systems.
  2. Perform design tasks including developing design requirements, producing BOM’s, sourcing components and resolve details for component form/fit/function
  3. Perform fit up analysis to ensure design aligns with field installation and project plans
  4. Understand and interpret piping & instrumentation diagrams and create physical design consistent with the engineering requirements
  5. Perform designs and system reviews to verify systems are designed in accordance with national codes and standards, as well as verifying the system performance is optimal for requested need.
  6. Assist in requirements development with customers to verify requests are within available system operating parameters with proper margins.
  7. Work with Operations and Maintenance Team to perform system activation, initial data analysis, system fine tuning, and assist in root cause analysis for non-conformances.
  8. Develop and review analysis to verify system design is adequate and proper for operating conditions and customer requirements.
  9. Develop and review drawing packages to verify system design is adequate and proper for operating conditions.
  10. Provides guidance and instruction on design, as well as functional and operational understanding for various systems at MARS facilities.
  11. Directs coordination with other internal groups including Operations and Maintenance, Quality and Safety, and the management teams as needed.
  12. Develops task requirements and task plans that include budget/cost estimates, schedule, and performance criteria, while maintaining compliance with all Management, Quality, and Safety Policies.
  13. Develops engineering documentation, technical calculations, and design review packages.
  14. Supervises and participates in field inspections and reviews to assess conformance with design and operational requirements.
  15. Supervises and generates system change documentation to increase operating efficiency, performance, safety, and reliability.
  16. Responsible for oversight and management of maintenance, alteration, and operational tasks safely, efficiently and within allocated budget/schedule.
  17. Independently think and develop solutions for issues associated with engineered systems.
  18. Other duties as assigned

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

General Education

College: Preferred Bachelor's Degree

Major: Engineering or related

Job-Related Experience: Minimum five years of direct work experience with the design of complex engineered systems, including piping and fluid systems. Experience with space launch ground support equipment is highly desirable. Experience in the design of cryogenic fluid systems desirable. Professional Engineer licensure or equivalent responsible charge is preferred and may substitute for the prior five-year experience requirement. Professional experience in Autodesk AutoCAD software or equivalent, as well as a 3D drafting software package.

Certifications: N/A, PE license preferred.

Licenses, etc.: Valid driver's license is necessary when operating a vehicle while on agency business.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of engineering disciplines and industry practices as applied to the operation of technical facilities. Familiar with design, construction, activation, operation, and decommissioning of complex systems. Understand operational support functions such as logistics, procurement, contracts, equipment maintenance, quality assurance-related process control systems, safety programs related to industrial operations, and environmental regulations as applied to support functions.

Skills:

  • Proficient with AutoCAD Plant 3D
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Organization and attention to detail
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office or related programs.
  • SharePoint experience preferred.

Abilities:

  • Time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates high professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.

Physical Demands:

Work is light requiring lifting of computer equipment and involves typical office behaviors. Some travel is required to other counties.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a typical office setting.

Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for issuance of a NASA credential.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
