The Covanta SEMASS Facility processes 3,200 tons per day of municipal solid waste, generating up to 75 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to ISO New England. The facility’s shred and burn combustion system incorporates the technology of Riley Stoker and features three 1100 ton-per-day water-wall furnaces. The two condensing turbines utilize two air-cooled condensers. The facility is equipped with advanced ferrous and non-ferrous collection systems, which recover and recycle 35,000 tons of metals per year.

We seek a dedicated Electrical & Instrumentation Technician who will safely work as part of a team to maintain, diagnose, install and repair all types of power plant & fuel processing equipment. Must be able to communicate well with groups or individuals to solve problems. The candidate must be a self-starter and be able to prioritize work based on plant production requirements. They must work independently with minimal assistance and understand and follow all safety procedures relating to the plant and electrical equipment.

The Electrical & Instrumentation Technician will participate in daily preventative, scheduled, and corrective maintenance activities safely, effectively, and timely as needed in an electrical generation facility. Specific duties include but are not limited to inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of electrical equipment and plant analog and digital control circuits and instrumentation. This Energy from Waste facility has equipment from 110V-115KV; with in-plant distribution at 4160V, most facility equipment operating at 480V. Facility equipment includes, but is not limited to: hydraulics, fans, pumps, conveyors, shredders, and low-voltage systems

The Electrical & Instrumentation Technician will responsible for daily maintenance and preventative maintenance of the Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEMs) and Continuous Opacity Monitoring (COMs) systems. Will terminate electric motors 4160V and lower. Install conduits and wiring for new installations, and repairs to existing equipment are required. Perform preventative maintenance on all plant electrical equipment is essential, and documentation of work to be completed and work accomplished. This individual will be responsible for reading and utilizing PLC ladder logic. Reading, interpreting, and utilizing equipment manuals for technical clarification and requisitioning parts and material is required. The employee will be required to use computer-based Maintenance Management Program (ALM) to access work orders for both corrective and preventative.

Position Requirements:

To be considered for this position, the individual should have at least three years of industrial plant experience repairing and maintaining high voltage electrical equipment and electronic instrumentation/control systems and hold a High School diploma and valid Driver’s License.

Electrical Journeyman’s License is preferred, or solid technical Instrumentation & Controls experience.

Basic understanding of power plant fundamentals to include boiler and turbine operation, ash handling equipment, and pollution control equipment
PLCs (Allen Bradley RSVIEW, RSLIGIX 5000, SCL-500, Control Logix, Omron)
Foxboro I/A DCS control system
VFDs 4160/480V
Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMs)/Continuous Opacity Monitoring (COMs) maintenance and troubleshooting components/analyzers
Control valves, damper drives and process control transmitters, electronic and pneumatic controls calibration and maintenance
120V to 115KV switchgear
MCC Controls
125VDC and UPS systems
Relay logic
Process loop controllers
Test, troubleshoot, and PM various types of motors ranging from 1-2000 AC/DC horsepower
P&IDs, schematics, and equipment manual for electrical equipment installation, troubleshooting, and programming.
Helping to redesign instrumentation, control and electrical systems, as required.
Test equipment such as Megger, DLRO, and DMM.
Fire alarm systems
Camera systems, both IP and analog
Access control
Fiber data networking
Computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel Teams, and Outlook as well as Maintenance Management Program (ALM)
Performs other duties as required.

The successful candidate will be a safety conscious team player that takes pride in their work and workplace. They will work to learn new skills and be open to occasional cross discipline activities to progress the team goals.

Must be willing to be trained to operate equipment with telescoping boom and scissor lift, and other mobile equipment.

Must be able to work overtime on a rotating on-call schedule to support plant operations as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to perform extensive overtime hours during planned and unplanned maintenance.

Must be able to work in all locations within the plant, under extremes of hot and cold, and in areas of dust, noise, and wet conditions. Must be able to climb a ladder 345’ to access equipment and work from heights using fall protection, lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs, and other manual labor, including pushing, pulling, sweeping, and shoveling.
