Position Focus

In 1971, Yale University became one of the first universities in the U.S. to provide healthcare services to its faculty, staff, and students. Today, Yale Health, a not-for-profit organization, serves more than 47,000 members of the Yale community and their families with more than 150 board-certified healthcare providers. Most care and services are provided in our state-of-the-art, facility, with modern exam rooms, an Acute Care, an inpatient facility, a diagnostic imaging suite, and a full-service retail pharmacy.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of Immunizations, this primary role will be to administer and support immunizations for Yale Health members. Immunization nurse, will adhere to standing orders and protocols for routine administration of vaccines and medications for students and adult members. Additional requirements include Travel Health and patient education for travelers. This role includes daily management of all patient communications and clinician messages, orders and follow up care, if indicated. During peak seasonal demand such as flu season, RSV or other vaccine season, this role may include orientation and training of per diem nurses to support demand. Ideally, nurse role will provide significant support to primary care to ensure seamless vaccinations associated with same day encounters in the department. Cross-training coverage to Student Health/Athletic Medicine primary care departments, as needed. This role provides direct nursing care that is safe, effective and evidence based, for members of Yale Immunization population. Role includes significant triage and assessment of walk-in patients, care coordination for travel health, consisting of chart preparation, maintenance of clinical schedules, administration of travel vaccinations, and travel health clinical knowledge. Fosters ongoing improvements of service and a culture that prioritizes safety. Role requires interface with key clinical partners, make difficult decisions and facilitate resolution.

Additional Responsibilities Include

  • Supports the Immunization Care Team by assuming responsibility for vaccination and medication administration. Coordinates and/or delivers direct nursing care to patients and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to support the work of the team, department activities, and accomplishment of positive patient outcomes.
  • Clinical judgment and decision making in accordance with clinical practice guidelines, protocols and clinician orders, including follow up, preventative health, maintenance, teaching and education, including high demand times.
  • Responsible for evaluation and disposition of scheduled and same day walk -in patients.
  • Delegates responsibilities to appropriate members of the care delivery team based on an understanding of others' roles, scope of practice, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure optimal utilization of personnel.
  • Assure appropriate documentation of patient encounters, including patient teaching, self-care advice, travel health information, vaccination summaries, and coordination of health services. Responsible for training and orientation of members on a care team.
  • Identify education needed to assure competent delivery of patient care for oneself and others in the department.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment by being responsive to the need for change.
  • Maintains a collaborative work relationship with staff through respect and recognition of cultural and human diversity.
  • Completes the competency-based orientation within designated time frame.
  • Identifies self-learning needs and actively participates in meeting them in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Sets and achieves professional goals.

Required Education And Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

Required Skill/Ability 1

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Computer proficiency as it relates to the use of an EMR, Outlook email, and other computerized databases.

Required Skill/Ability 2

At least 2 years in a medical/surgical setting, critical care setting, preferably in a hospital or outpatient/ambulatory facility.

Required Skill/Ability 3

Competent clinical triage skills and critical thinking skills with attention to detail. Current CPR.

Required Skill/Ability 4

Evidence of maintenance of professional skill and competency, attendance at educational programs such as seminars and workshops that are appropriate to the field.

Required Skill/Ability 5

Excellent attendance, punctuality, and reliability.

Preferred Education, Experience And Skills

Demonstrated experience in an in-patient hospital unit in relevant specialty. Experience in Immunizations administration as well as administration of medications. Active membership in professional organizations.

Required Licenses Or Certifications

Licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.

Physical Requirements

May require prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Requires keyboard use and ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
