Certifications & Licenses:
High School Diploma/GED - REQUIRED
Tumor Registry certification (CTR) - REQUIRED
RHIA - REQUIRED
RHIT - REQUIRED

Skills:
3 years experience Tumor Registry experience in an acute care hospital or equivalent abstracting experience.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR):
Cancer Data Collection: Collect, abstract, and analyze cancer-related data from various sources, including medical records, pathology reports, and diagnostic imaging, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Tumor Registry Management: Maintain a comprehensive database of cancer cases, including patient demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcomes, in compliance with regulatory standards and reporting requirements.
Data Quality Assurance: Perform quality checks and validation procedures to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of cancer data collected, adhering to established coding standards and classification systems.
Cancer Surveillance: Monitor trends and patterns in cancer incidence, prevalence, and survival rates, conducting regular follow-up on patients to track disease progression, treatment outcomes, and recurrence.
Reporting and Analysis: Prepare and submit timely and accurate reports to regulatory agencies, such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and state cancer registries, as well as internal stakeholders, to support cancer research, public health initiatives, and healthcare planning.
Collaboration: Collaborate with healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, as well as cancer registrars from other facilities, to exchange information, share best practices, and ensure continuity of care for cancer patients.
Education and Training: Stay updated on changes in cancer registration standards, coding guidelines, and reporting requirements through continuing education and professional development opportunities, and provide training to staff members on cancer data management practices.
Compliance and Privacy: Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in handling sensitive patient information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and institutional policies regarding data security and privacy.
Research Support: Assist researchers and epidemiologists in accessing cancer data for epidemiological studies, outcomes research, and clinical trials, facilitating data analysis and interpretation to advance cancer research and evidence-based practice.
Patient Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of cancer patients, ensuring their voices are heard in the healthcare system and promoting access to quality cancer care, support services, and resources to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
