About the Position

THIS IS PART-TIME, TEMPORARY, AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT.

THIS POSITION DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR FULL TIME BENEFITS.

May work up to 29 hours per week, up to a maximum of 960 hours in a fiscal year.

Performs routine public contact and safety work in serving as a pool lifeguard; performs related work as required.

Class Characteristics
This class is distinguished from the Swim Instructor by the latter's responsibility for providing instruction in aquatic activities as well as lifeguard duties. It is distinguished from the Senior Lifeguard by the latter's responsibility for providing lead direction to Lifeguards and Swim Instructors.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of an Aquatics Coordinator, and technical oversight of Senior Lifeguards.

Examples of Essential Functions

Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Monitors the use of the swimming pool; enforces safety rules.

Patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility; keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water or on a diving board or swimming pool deck; warns people against dangerous practices regarding pool use; enters water to rescue persons in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid as needed.

Assists in implementing various aquatics competitions throughout the year.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, running errands, picking up supplies needed for aquatic activities.

Assists in the maintenance of the swimming pool; assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or about the swimming pool.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Required Licenses and Certificates:
Current American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguard Training and First Aid.
Current American Red Cross certifications in C.P.R. for the Professional Rescuer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: life saving methods and application of first aid; polices, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the pool; methods and practices of pool cleaning and maintenance.

Ability to: rescue distressed swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise conduct of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; effectively enforce safety and health regulations relating to aquatics program; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public; communicate effectively orally; give and understand oral instructions.

The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud.
