As we embark on the journey to modernize our data assets in the cloud and build out our analytics capabilities in Power BI, Merchants is seeking an Operations Manager to lead the growth of the data layer support and enhancement team. This role will work cross functionally with internal and external users, Product Owners, Data Engineering and Power BI teams with a relentless focus to ensure users feel supported and have the best experience. This position will provide a general level of subject matter expertise surrounding data management best practices, including database platforms, data integration pipelines, and data quality monitoring. This manager must couple effective communication and technical team management skills with the ability to synthesize difficult and complex problems to provide world class service to stakeholders.
Location: Rosemont, IL or Hooksett, NH preferred, remote can be considered
What your day looks like:
- Own and grow all aspects of data and analytics operations including production support and BI operations
- Build and lead the production support function and associated processes to be the primary interface with users for production issues, establish tiered support model and manage escalations
- Establish processes and systems in collaboration with Data Engineering to proactively monitor and alert all aspects of Merchants data platform and products
- Define and implement communication processes to ensure users are updated appropriately of work status and system impacts
- Establish and track SLAs for all data operations activities
- Ensure visibility of all operational issues and metrics to management and leadership and proactively identify opportunities for operational efficiencies
- Administer operational activities related to data management such as metadata capture, data quality, data security, data lineage, and data inventory
- Collaborate with build teams to support ongoing development and participate in release planning, training, and hand-off of new releases
- Ensure data operations and systems data integration are functioning at an optimal level
- Lead process improvements around database backup, restore, and archival
The skills you bring:
- Ability to manage direct hire and partner resources in technical environment, and maintain a 75% hands-on, 25% technical leadership workload breakdown
- Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of settings and styles; is effective in a variety of formal presentation and meeting settings
- Establish good working relationships with stakeholder leadership teams to ensure their needs are being met
- Strong ‘machine’ orientation – taking run books and optimizing automation, eradicating manual intervention, and intense curiosity to perform root cause analysis on data issues to improve consistency and delivery
- Exhibits a desire and aptitude for continuous learning and growth
- Adjusts quickly to complexity and change
The experience and education you have:
- 5+ years of experience working in data or technical operations
- Experience working in a data operations environment and understanding the data product lifecycle
- Demonstrated experience of running technical support teams and driving operational excellence
- Working in an agile environment with a cross functional and globally distributed team including offshore teams with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
- Working knowledge of the following database technologies: SQL Server Database, Snowflake, and Cosmos DB
- Working knowledge of the following reporting technologies: Power BI, SSRS, and Tableau
- Working knowledge of Azure Data Integration technologies: ADF (Azure Data Factory), Event Hub, Streaming Analytics
- Direct People management experience
- Bachelor’s degree
