ABOUT THE ROLE: 3D Systems was awarded a U.S. Air Force contract for a Large-format Metal 3D Printer Advanced Technology Demonstrator. The contract supports the development of large-scale hypersonic-relevant additive manufacturing print capabilities. Work will be performed in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and in San Diego, California to design, build and deliver a large frame laser powder bed fusion system that will set new standards for productivity and reliability. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer with a specialized focus on Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) machines. This role involves leading the design, development, and optimization of advanced LPBF systems, ensuring they meet high-performance and reliability standards for cutting-edge manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in mechanical design, thermal management, and systems integration specific to LPBF technology. WHAT YOU’LL DO: * Design & Development:Lead the mechanical design and development of LPBF machines, including the development of key components such as laser systems, powder handling mechanisms, and build chambers. * Multi-Laser Scanning:Develop strategies for full-field laser optics and scanning incorporating fume extraction, high-speed hatching, stitching and load sharing. * Optimization:Optimize LPBF machine performance by refining thermal management systems, enhancing precision mechanisms, and improving overall system efficiency. * Collaboration:Work closely with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing personnel to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems. * Prototyping & Testing:Oversee the prototyping and testing phases of LPBF machine development, ensuring that prototypes meet design specifications and performance criteria. * Troubleshooting:Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical issues and provide innovative solutions to enhance system reliability and performance. * Documentation:Prepare and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and user manuals. * Continuous Improvement:Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in LPBF and related fields to drive continuous improvement in machine design and performance. * Compliance:Ensure that all designs comply with relevant safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies. WHAT YOU'LL NEED: * Education:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. * Experience:Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in mechanical engineering with a focus on LPBF or related additive manufacturing technologies. * Technical Skills: o Expertise in the design and operation of LPBF machines. o Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks). o Strong understanding of thermal management, precision engineering, and mechanical systems integration. o Experience with high-power lasers, scanners, powder delivery systems, and motion control mechanisms. * Problem-Solving:Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of resolving complex technical challenges. * Communication:Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present ideas and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Team Leadership:Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor junior engineers and collaborate effectively in a team environment. * Preferred Skills: o Experience with other additive manufacturing technologies and techniques. o Knowledge of advanced materials used in LPBF processes. o Familiarity with industry standards and certifications related to LPBF machines.
