CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT



I. Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Patient Care Coordinator and orders from the health care provider, the Medical Assistant will perform routine clinical tasks which may include taking medical histories, obtaining and recording vital signs, preparing patients for examination and assisting the healthcare provider during the examination or procedure.

II. Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

· Accurately obtains, measures and documents vital signs according to patient need and written protocol

· Documents patient chief complaint and concerns accurately and briefly

· Provides assistance with patient examinations

· Provides set up of all necessary supplies and equipment

· Instructs and assists patients in collection of specimens per written protocol

· Performs point-of-care testing for diagnostic tests

· Assists in the orientation and training of new staff members/medical assistant students following orientation protocols

· Maintains clean and safe examination rooms

· Stocks supplies and approved patient literature in patient examination rooms

· Sterilizes equipment per written protocol and maintains appropriate documentation of process

· Cleans and organizes the clean and dirty utility rooms

· Participates in daily huddle to review and discuss patient needs prior to appointment with recent test results and correspondence

· Administers medications, EKGs and other patient care services as ordered by the healthcare provider and within the Medical Assistant scope of practice

· Assists with emergent and urgent requests from the healthcare provider (ie. Referrals, ER access, emergency transport)

· Creates, maintains, copies and scans patient files EMR and other information as needed

· Maintain clinical logs as requested by Care Coordinator (Sample supplies, stock supplies, orders)

· Verifies patient demographic information at each visit to ensure appropriate contact to the patient and/or support family

· Queries patients in triage to ensure preventive health care guidelines are followed (ie. PAP, Mammograms, Colon Screening, HgbA1C)

· Processes correspondence for assigned provider review (ie. Disability forms, School/Work Excuses)

· Will be cross-trained with Referral Specialist and Medical Office Assistant to perform assigned duties or coverage

· Performs intake duties in the patient check-in and registration process and assists in making patient appointments

· Participates as a member of the patient clinical care team

· Perform other duties as required and/or directed.

Skills/Certifications:

· Ability to acquire considerable knowledge of the policies, procedures and programs.

· Considerable knowledge of modern techniques of staffing analysis.

· Considerable knowledge of the program responsibilities, functions, organizations, data management, and operating systems.

· Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply basic laws and regulations to specific situations.

· Ability to design and execute organization analysis for various purposes.

· Ability to design and execute detailed staffing and task analysis.

· Ability to assist in the development of department administrative directives as required.

· Ability to assist in investigative analysis and make effective recommendations as required.

· Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations as required.

· Ability to develop, implement and direct the use of appropriate office and record-keeping systems, methods and procedures.

· Ability to prepare analytical and administrative reports to be used in the evaluation and development of management programs, plans and techniques and other accurate and informative and related reports, summaries and statements of Division activities.

· Ability to direct the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.

· Ability to prepare clear, accurate and informative reports of progress of organizational units, results of research and reviews, and annual reports of accomplishments, future goals, and objectives.

· Ability to communicate clearly and work cooperatively with health care providers, health and human service professionals, community and professional societies, legal and financial officers, and others.

· Ability to work effectively with associates, as well as with supervisors, in the various units of the organization.

· Ability to assign, instruct, supervise and evaluate the work performance of employees engaged in the work of the administrative and operational units.

· Ability to work in a team relationship.

· Ability to supervise the maintenance of essential records and files.

· Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.

· Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or computerized information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Experience/Education Required:

· Must be a Certified Medical Assistant

· Experience working in OB/GYN

· Experience working with diverse population groups
