Description : Driver Trainer - District Safety Officer

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Associate degree preferred
  • SC (CDL), Class B, with passenger endorsement and School Bus (S) endorsements
  • Three (3) years experience as a Driver Trainer or Safety Officer with a school transportation department or in fleet operation
  • Successful completion of SC Third Party Examiner Course preferred
  • Successful completion of SC Department of Education Trainer Course preferred
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening

Responsible To: Director of Transportation

Job Goal:
To assist in providing safe, efficient and professional operation of bus fleet

Essential Functions:
  • Supervise assigned bus drivers and assistants, conduct annual performance appraisals/evaluations and make recommendations for approprirate employment actions
  • Plan and implement programs, policies, and procedures to provide effective and efficient safety training programs in support of all school transportation
  • Analyze safety, using current laws and policies, and suggest corrective actions
  • Coordinate Special Needs bus routes
  • Plan, design, implement, and evaluate training programs for all school bus drivers, assistants, and drivers of commercial vehicles
  • Compile data and analyze training needs in order to develop educational materials for improving driver performance
  • Schedule and implement bus safety programs for elementary students
  • Maintain accurate and current driver files as required to monitor health, safety, and driver history issues
  • Monitor CDL drivers to ensure compliance with applicable procecures and laws
  • Investigate and correct unsafe or hazard conditions at bus stops
  • Review Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on a monthly basis to identify any applicable driver license suspensions
  • Assist with on-site handling of disruptive student behavior or student injury on buses or at bus stops
  • Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities

  • Serve as district investigator of vehicle accidents, assist law enforcement and prepare reports for submission to Risk Management

  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events

  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner
  • Serve on school/district committees as required or as appropriate

System Support:
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member
  • Follow federal and stat laws as well as School Board policies, rules, and regulations
  • Demonstrate support for the school distict and its goals and priorities
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of all required reports and maintain all appropriate records
  • Partitipate in cross-training activities as required
  • Perform other tasks consistent wihtthe goals and objectives of this position
  • Serve as a sub driver as needed

  • Perform other related duties as required
