Primary Purpose

Supervise the Grounds Maintenance staff in maintaining the campus grounds. This is a working supervisory position, and the individual will be expected to actively participate in the ground's maintenance duties. Tasks include prioritizing and assigning work requests, monitoring the performance of staff, training staff, taking corrective action as needed, and maintaining supplies in adequate stock levels.

Position Duties

The primary responsibility is to supervise the grounds maintenance staff covering more than 156 acres on the main campus and a satellite site at the Wayne Executive Jetport. This is a working supervisory position and individual will be expected to actively participate in the ground's maintenance duties. Tasks include maintaining lawns, trees and shrubs, parking areas, roads, and athletic facilities. Duties include mowing, trimming, pruning, raking, picking up litter, emptying outside trash receptacles, applying fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides. Applicants must be able to walk over extended distances carrying equipment weighing more than 20 lbs. and be able to safely lift heavier objects. This position will require applicants to work in inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Position reports directly to the Facilities and Grounds Superintendent.

Position Requirements

Associates degree and one year of experience in grounds maintenance or related work desired. Must be able to communicate effectively, follow oral and written instructions, and work independently or in a team environment. Experience serving in a supervisory or team lead position is required. Must have certification or licensure in one of the following areas: turf grass management, landscaping, irrigation, or other applicable fields or have the ability to obtain certification/licensure within 18 months of employment. Must have a North Carolina pesticide applicator license or the ability to obtain certification/licensure within 18 months of employment. Must have considerable knowledge of and demonstrate the ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment, and the ability to operate trucks and light motorized equipment. Knowledge of irrigation systems and small engine operation and repair experience preferred. Candidates must have basic working knowledge of computers and associated software. A valid North Carolina Driver's License and a driving record which allows applicant to be insurable under WCC's auto insurance policy is required. Bilingual in both English and Spanish are preferred. A National Career Readiness Certificate is preferred.
