Wildland Firefighter - Direct Hire Authority at Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pocatello, Idaho, United States Job Description Summary This Wildland Firefighter position serves as an Engine Boss with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Northwest Region, Fort Hall Agency, Branch of Natural Resources and Fire, Duty Station in Pocatello, Idaho; and will be filled from Standard PD Number: DX00400/DX00500 This announcement will be used to fill vacancies utilizing the Direct-Hire Authority (5CFR 337.201). Responsibilities Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine ensuring the correct positioning, proper use and operation. Performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose and in the operation and maintenance of chainsaws. Conducts and participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. Makes initial evaluation of fire situations; determines suppression methods to use, deployment of module/crew, type of tools to use and application of water. Coordinates and provides oversight in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations. Plans and assigns work to be accomplished by subordinate positions, sets and adjusts priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications NOTE: This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Fire Engine Operator (SEOP) and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Detailed information regarding IFPM positions can be found at GS-7: 1 year of creditable specialized wildland fire management work experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service.
