Job Title: Assistant Maintenance Manager Location: Union, Illinois
Reports to: General Manager
General Purpose of the Position:
Assist and support the Maintenance Manager in overseeing the maintenance operations of our manufacturing facility. This includes leading the Site Maintenance team in providing both a reactive and pro-active, multi-skilled maintenance service on all operational equipment. Managing day-to-day maintenance activities, including timely troubleshooting and root-cause analysis. Planning and managing all project work carried out by the Site Maintenance Team.
This role works with the Site Maintenance Team in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, overhauling and repairing stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
This position is not a "desk job" it is a hands-on role for the majority of the workday.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Understand and comply with all health and safety legislation.
  • Be aware of all actual and potential health and safety hazards in area of responsibility. This includes knowledge of the chemicals/hazardous materials being utilized and the appropriate controls required to ensure they are used safely.
  • Ensure employees wear required PPE at all times.
  • Ensure that all employees know and adhere to safety requirements for all areas, follow standardized work instructions and perform process checks/inspections.
  • Inspect the work area on a regular basis to ensure requirements of CWI's good housekeeping program are adhered to.
  • Interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • In conjunction with the Site Maintenance Team:
    • Install, align, dismantle and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
    • Detect, isolate and identify irregularities and malfunctions in machinery and equipment.
    • Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, hydraulic, pneumatic and vacuum systems.
    • Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts.
    • Operate machine tools such as welders, lathes and grinders to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery.
    • Clean, lubricate and perform other maintenance work on machinery.
    • Assemble machinery and equipment prior to installation using hand and power tools and welding equipment.
  • In conjunction with the Maintenance Manager:
    • Provide monthly health and safety training sessions.
    • Develop and plan maintenance schedules on all repair and installation activities.
    • Develop a Planned Preventative (PPM) schedule and ensure full preventative maintenance is carried out.
    • Establish and maintain project charge numbers for all maintenance projects.
    • Review and approve all maintenance related purchase orders.
    • Manage contractors on site to ensure they meet legal and company requirements.
    • Respond to emergency calls for maintenance.
    • Responsible for maintenance budgets and KPI's.
    • Oversee the purchasing of maintenance equipment, parts and spares to ensure optimum levels are always maintained.
    • Responsible for working with Purchasing Dept. to ensure applicable guarding, electrical and other regulatory standards are flowed down to equipment suppliers, in accordance with CWI procedures.
    • Assist Purchasing Dept. with sourcing material and equipment to support maintenance.
    • Maximize Plant availability through the implementation of planned and preventative maintenance.
    • Effectively interview, train, develop, counsel and discipline employees.
    • Monitor and assess employee performance and manage expectations.
    • Resolve personnel problems - investigate issues, identify solutions, recommend action.
    • Manage time and attendance for employees in computerized payroll system.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects.
  • Instill and maintain strong customer service orientation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
    • High school graduate or equivalent required.
    • Degree, diploma or technical certification in a related field preferred.
    • Experience in a manufacturing environment required, preferably in an industrial maintenance or similar role.
    • Previous supervisory/managerial experience preferred.
    • Ability to understand manufacturing engineering processes.
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
    • Good computer skills including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word.
    • Experience of Microsoft Project an asset.
    • Experience of MRP/ERP system preferred.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
    • Work in a safe manner.
    • Must have valid drivers license.
